El Pinsapar

This trail takes us into the forest of Spanish firs, the singular spruce species that led to the declaration of these mountains as a Biosphere Reserve and Natural Park.

The Spanish fir is one of the nine species of spruce living in the Mediterranean mountains. In particular, it is only found in Andalusia in the Serrania de Ronda and the Sierra de Grazalema, where it extends over 400 hectares on the Sierra del Pinar. The fir forests were much more widespread a million years ago, when weather conditions were very different from today. It is, therefore, a vestige of that time, a botanical jewel restricted to a very limited distribution area.

Later, the pinsapos shall give prominence to oaks while one descends along a track towards of the small town of Benamahoma. On the cliffs of the mountain it will be possible to see red billed choughs and vultures circling overhead.

*All the images of nests or captured bird were taken during authorised scientific experiments
